My roommate (Mei) and I agreed we would try our own version of a minimalist wardrobe diet(?) for 3 weeks. Seeing as I will be graduating in about 3 months with a limited budget and no job this project is timely.
We decided to limit our wardrobes to 15 items excluding undergarments (i.e. bras, socks, underwear), pajamas, workout clothes, and bags/bagpacks. This isn’t an extreme diet (we kind of already only rotate 15 items) and in contrast to our inspiration it looks like we’re going to be living our weeks in luxury. I’de like to think we’re doing this experiment to see what 3 weeks are like when all our excess material goods are removed. While we may end up doing a lot more laundry loads than we would have done prior, having a smaller quantity of clothing to wash will mean that we can share machines and curb their costs.
My breakdown:
3 sweaters (black knitted, black zip up, grey sweatshirt)
3 pants (black denim, blue denim, grey)
4 long sleeve shirts (black, blue, grey, maroon button down)
1 t-shirt (black)
1 blazer (silvery black)
1 jacket/coat (blue/camel)
1 vest (puffy black)
1 pair of shoes (black sneakers)
Emily, already a minimalist in her wardrobe selections, has agreed to do the opposite and wear an item in her closet no more than once a week.
Mei’s:
2 sweaters (beige knitted, white knitted)
3 pants (black, black, navy/green/maroon/black floral)
3 tshirts (caramel crop top, blue and white striped crop top, grey crop top)
1 cami (black)
1 shirt (floral button down)
2 jackets (denim, blue)
3 pairs of shoes (black military boot, chelsea short boot, 1 more tba)

Anyone want to take a trip to the Museum of the City of New York?
One of the deepest YouTube holes I have fallen down was over clips of “Stairway to Stardom”, a public-access cable show from the early/mid eighties that showcased all manner of young talents and loud-singing people from the Staten Island area. You watch one, and you will not stop. Some dancers (the leotard-clad Lola Perazzo) are content to do a dance they memorized from a Michael Jackson video, but here, Michelle Sutlovich crafted her own original routine… with ferocity and fringe. Here is some inspiration to really give it your all in 2012.
